Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center - Connect to the Story of Bamboo Art

Museums lose up to 70% of visitor engagement when guides require downloading apps or renting hardware. To solve this, Laxy worked with the Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center (別府市竹細工伝統産業会館) to create a web-based guide. It is our honor to contribute to the preservation of Beppu's historic bamboo art.

Visitors can now read about the exhibits directly on their smartphones. The guides explain how these intricate bamboo pieces were made, and how they fit into daily life in Japan.

We use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to translate the exhibit details into multiple languages. After the center mentioned that many French tourists visit specifically for the bamboo art, we added French support for this deployment. Laxy can add specific languages based on the visitor profile of each spot, helping every guest learn in their preferred language.

The guides show details that visitors might otherwise miss. For example, visitors can read about how Thomas Edison used Beppu bamboo filaments in his early light bulbs, and learn about the local harvesting techniques passed down through generations.

To give the museum full operational flexibility, each exhibit features both Near Field Communication (NFC) tags and Quick Response (QR) codes. Visitors can either scan the QR code or tap the NFC tag to open the guide. This setup works for all modern smartphones and lets visitors choose how they want to interact.

By removing the friction of traditional audio guides, we hope to make Beppu's rich craft heritage accessible to everyone who walks through the doors.
